AV&R’s automated profiling systems create high precision elliptical profiles on blades and vanes according to engineering designs. Their adaptive and closed-loop capabilities allow them to reach a ± 25 micron tolerance (± 0.9 thousandth of an inch or 0.025 millimeters).

Our automated systems include an inspection system used to perform final profile inspection of the leading and trailing edges. The repeatability of the measurements obtained is: Gage R&R (EV) ≤ 12 % for a tolerance of ±50µm/±.002″ within 4 sigma. Thinning of trailing edges, tri-blend and polishing of the blades, including platforms and fillet radii, can also be executed in these systems.

Whether for high or low pressure vanes (HPT & LPT), compressor or fan blades, our adaptive profiling systems achieve the levels of precision required for the newest engine designs.

With proven expertise in adaptive robotic profiling, our team has implemented its solution to the repair (MRO) market. Our blade re-profiling systems inspect the parts entering the machine and use the design of the original parts to adjust the work to be done to each piece. Combining vision and robotics, these innovative systems are a breakthrough in the engine component overhaul (MRO) industry.

Achieving an accuracy of ± 25 micron tolerance (± 0.9 thousandth of an inch or 0.025 millimeters), AV&R’s robotic systems meet the requirements of part repair plants by recreating high precision elliptical profiles on used blades as if they were new, minimizing the removal of parent material. To achieve such tight tolerances, our team has developed adaptive and closed-loop capabilities, coupled with final leading and trailing edge inspection.

Thinning of trailing edges and polishing of engine run blades can also be performed in these systems. As for the repeatability of inspection measurements, our systems achieve an R&R (EV) ≤ 12% for a tolerance of ±50µm/±.002″ within 4 sigma.

With these capabilities, our robotic re-profiling systems are the right choice to recreate the profiles of engine run parts during their service life, for both high and low pressure blades (HPC & LPC) as well as fan blades.

Automated Re-profiling Benefits

From a business perspective, replacing manual re-profiling by precise robotic systems will:

  • Improve quality and consistency of your production by eliminating human subjectivity
  • Reduce the scrap rate and increase the life of your parts since the system removes minimal parent material
  • Reduce abrasive consumption
  • Reduce the risk of worker injuries
